Briefing
Long-form analysis of what is and is not working in the Africa–CARICOM relationship, built on primary documents and published research.
- The Eighth Summit Will Be the Third
Paragraph 19 of the 2021 communiqué committed the parties to a summit every 7 September. Summits were held in 2021 and 2025; the next is scheduled for 2028. The commitment has never been amended — only overtaken.
- Five Billion Dollars Will Not Fix It
The partnership has money and political will. What it does not have is a container ship — and IMF research published this year suggests financial connectivity is not the binding constraint at all.
- Continental context: AfCFTA and the AU's stalled free-movement protocol
Neither is a CARICOM commitment, but both shape what this partnership can eventually carry. One is most of the way to ratified. The other has been stuck at four ratifications since 2019.
